Frequently Asked Questions...

Q: How can I join the school and when would I start?

A: You can register by coming to any class location during any scheduled class. Registration is ongoing, so you may join the class at your convenience!

Q: I have previous martial arts experience. Do I have to start all over again?

A: No. The Manchester School of Tae Kwon Do will recognize your current rank and work to bring you to standard for the equivalent rank in our system. This is true even if you have been away from the martial arts for an extended period of time. When beginning a new system or style, some students prefer to "start fresh", regardless of previously attained rank. This is an acceptable option. You may discuss this or other accommodations with Master Higgins when you visit the school or contact us by email.

Q: Is there an age limit for taking lessons at the school?

A: Students aged 5 to adult can enroll in our traditional classes.
On occasion, a younger child may enroll in class with permission of the instructor. If your child is younger than 5 and you feel he or she is ready, we encourage you to visit the school during any classtime to speak with our instructors.

Q: What equipment do I need to start? A uniform? Where do I get one?

A: A uniform, called a "gi", is not immediately required for new students. You may begin your workouts in sweatpants and a T-shirt, or any appropriate non-restrictive clothing (sweats, etc). For males, a strap and cup are mandatory. A uniform should be purchased previous to a students first testing, however. Parents of younger students are encouraged to delay their purchase until they feel the child is committed to staying in the program You may purchase your gi through the school.

Q: I'm just a beginner! It looks pretty intimidating....Do you have "beginner" classes?

A: A wise man once observed that every journey begins with a single step... Initially, new students are taught separately from the main class, where they receive more attention from individual black belt instructors. This gives the new students the opportunity to learn basic stances, kicks, and punches in a less formal atmosphere. Once the new student has established a foundation, he or she will join in with the main class. This period can last 5 to 7 classes, depending on the individual.

Q: Can I try a class before I decide to join?

A: The Manchester School of Tae Kwon Do allows prospective students to enjoy a complimentary class. In the case of younger students, we require a parent or guardian accompany the student for the selected class.
